IQOS

IQOS is a brand developed by Philip Morris International - a tobacco company that believes in harm reduction and working towards a future free of smoke. IQOS is a range of heat not burn products that use real tobacco, for an authentic tobacco taste, in the form of tobacco sticks such as IQOS Heets and IQOS Terea.

The Heets IQOS and Terea IQOS utilise a special blend of tobacco that is gradually heated to produce an inhalable aerosol containing nicotine, rather than combusted, as such they’re sometimes called IQOS cigarettes, although they’re very different in terms of their usage and potential as the IQOS tobacco in their tobacco sticks does not produce tar, ash or smoke and releases significantly less odour.

Each IQOS device such as the new IQOS, the IQOS Iluma, or their previous models, the IQOS duo and IQOS 3, use heating elements, also known as a heating blade, which gradually heats the blended tobacco to provide you with an alternative to smoking that produces up to 95% less carbon monoxide than cigarettes - this is the result of years of research and scientific studies including thousands of product testers.

What is IQOS?

An IQOS Starter Kit, such as the Iluma IQOS, is sometimes referred to as an IQOS vape or IQOS pen, and is a device that heats tobacco rather than igniting it, in order to produce a vapour that contains nicotine without producing smoke, ash or tar like regular cigarettes. As IQOS devices like the IQOS Iluma One do not produce smoke and are heated instead of burned they do not produce the same levels of harmful chemicals as other tobacco products.

Most noticeable, although many may call using an IQOS smoking, the IQOS tobacco sticks release significantly less carbon monoxide than cigarettes, with reports stating that they produce as much as 95% less carbon monoxide per tobacco stick.

How Does IQOS Work?

IQOS Kits use specially blended tobacco sticks, such as Heets and Terea. Heets are used with the previous versions of IQOS such as the IQOS 3 Multi, which came with an IQOS Charger and an IQOS Holder. The IQOS Holder contained a heating blade that was designed for use alongside Heets, whilst the IQOS new deviceht, the Iluma IQOS, has been designed specifically for use with the IQOS Terea sticks which themselves feature a heating blade.

To use IQOS you have to insert the tobacco stick either directly into the IQOS device or into the IQOS holder; this is where the IQOS tobacco stick will be heated to produce the vapour that you inhale. When the tobacco stick has been heated and is ready for use the LED light on your IQOS kit or holder will become solid rather than blinking - some of the IQOS new heated tobacco devices include haptic feedback where the device will also vibrate to let you know that it’s ready to go.

To use the IQOS once the tobacco stick is heated, inhale on the filter as you would if you were smoking a cigarette. The final step, once your Heet stick or Terea stick is finished, carefully remove it from the device and dispose of it safely.

Is IQOS Better than Vaping?

The IQOS vs Vape argument is almost as old as IQOS itself; and we’re here to settle the debate. IQOS is not better than vaping; but that doesn’t mean it’s worse either. Both IQOS and vaping are suited to different purposes and often, different audiences too - see below.

Who is IQOS best for?

IQOS is a heated tobacco system that is best suited to individuals who enjoy the taste of real tobacco, as well as those who may have tried vaping and find the sensation simply too different to smoking. If you’re not ready to truly step away from smoking but are looking for a cheaper, or potentially safer alternative, IQOS is for you.

Who is Vaping best for?

Vaping, on the other hand, is best suited to those who don’t particularly enjoy the taste of tobacco but are still looking to satisfy their nicotine cravings. They also give you much more control over your nicotine consumption, depending on the type of vape you use, such as a refillable vape, so you can gradually lower your nicotine intake by selecting specific nicotine strengths in your vape juice. Whereas, with IQOS, there are many different flavours in their tobacco sticks, but only one nicotine strength. Vaping is also considered generally much safer than using products that contain real tobacco, as vape liquids don’t contain the same harmful chemicals found in tobacco, aside from nicotine which is an addictive substance.
