What are vape tanks?

Vaping tanks, sometimes referred to as an atomiser or simply ‘vape top’ are the part of the vape kit that contains the vape juice and the coil, which is the part that heats up the e-liquid and turns it into a vapour that the user inhales. An ecig tank is made up of several components - a drip tip, a top cap, a glass tube, a base and a coil.

  • Drip Tip: Sometimes referred to as a mouthpiece. The section at the top of the device that you inhale from. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
  • Top Cap: The part of the tank that houses the port used to fill it with e-liquid.
  • Glass Tube: Often cylindrical in shape and is the part of the tank that contains the e-liquid.
  • Coil: The part of the tank responsible for heating the e-liquid and turning it into a vapour.
  • Base: The section at the bottom that connects the tank to the vape mod, often with a 510 connection pin.

How do vape tanks work?

E cig tanks work by using a coil to heat the vape juice that they contain, which in turn produces a vapour that is inhaled by the user.
Many vape tanks have a fill-port located at the top which you use to insert your e-liquid. They also have a vape coil (filter/atomiser) at the centre that soaks up the liquid using a cotton wick and vapourises it using a metallic heating element when the device is activated.

Types of vape tank

At Grey Haze we understand that our customers each have their own unique preferences, which is why we sell all different types of vape tanks -  to make sure that we cater to each and every type of vaper.

Sub-ohm vape tanks

A ‘Sub ohm tank’, also referred to as a Direct-to-Lung or DTL tank, is a tank that uses coils with a low resistance. They tend to be more powerful than other types of tanks and are able to provide thicker, larger clouds of vapour and a stronger hit. They perform best with high VG vape juices.

Mouth-to-Lung vape tanks

A mouth to lung tank, also known as a MTL tank, is a type of tank that uses coils with a higher resistance. As a result they produce less vapour, are less powerful and often have a tighter draw with an inhale that feels similar to smoking. MTL vaping is recommended for those who enjoy stronger nicotine,  and as such these ecig tanks should be used with 50/50 e-liquids like nicotine salts.

Rebuildable vape tanks

There are two types of rebuildable vape tank - an RDA and an RTA.

RDA vape tanks (known as a rebuildable dripping atomizer or ‘drip tank’ for short) allow you to build and wick your own coil, but rather than containing e-liquid, instead the user must drip vape juice directly onto the coil and cotton itself.

RTA vape tanks, A.K.A rebuildable tank atomizer, is very similar to an RDA in the fact that you still need to build and wick the coil yourself - but RTAs are more convenient as they come with a glass cylinder that can be filled with e-liquid.

Disposable vape tanks

Disposable tanks, like the Innokin Go S tank are a type of refillable tank that come with a built-in coil that can’t be replaced. These tanks can be refilled and reused multiple times. Once you begin to notice a change in flavour you can dispose of the tank and replace it with a new one.

Best Vape Tanks

First Time Vapers:

Whether it’s your first time vaping, or you have a preference for simple, straightforward tanks, we have a wide variety of user-friendly vape tanks for every experience level and budget. For beginners we’d recommend vape tanks by Aspire, Innokin or VooPoo as they produce many of the best MTL tanks, which tend to be easier to use.

Experienced Vapers:

If you’ve been vaping for a while now and you’re looking for the best tank for flavour, versatility or more vapour production, we’d recommend sub-ohm tanks by Geek Vape, Smok or Uwell. These are often the best vape tank brands for those who enjoy more power and flavour - they also offer the user multiple ways to customise their experience through a variety of coil options and an adjustable airflow.

How to clean a vape tank?

Cleaning your vape tank is relatively simple.
The first step is to remove the tank from the vape device. Once you’ve removed the tank, unscrew the base at the bottom of the tank and set it to one side. The next step is to take the coil out of the tank.

Once you’ve done this, place the base, glass tube, top cap and mouth piece under warm running water to rinse away the excess e-liquid and any residual dust or dirt. Avoid using harsh chemicals whilst tank cleaning, and don’t wash the coil.
Once the tank is clean use a fresh dry piece of kitchen towel to get rid of leftover water and then let the tank air dry somewhere warm and out of direct sunlight.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Why are vape tanks only 2ml?

Due to TPD regulations, tanks in the UK must have an e-liquid capacity of 2ml or less. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to give up on big vape tanks. If you want a large vape tank with a capacity such as 4ml, 5ml or 10ml you should pick a tank that is compatible with a replacement bubble tank glass (sold separately).
This type of vape glass can extend the tanks e-liquid capacity, allowing you to vape for longer without needing to refill your vape tank.

How long do disposable vape tanks last?

A disposable vape tank will last an average of 1 - 2 weeks before needing to be replaced. The exact amount of time that a disposable tank lasts can vary depending on its usage and how well it's maintained. Try to keep your tank topped up with vape liquid, as a dry coil can burn very quickly.

Will any tank fit my vape?

Many modern vape tanks feature the universal 510 connection pin, making them compatible with a wide variety of vape mods. Although, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all mod tanks will fit all vape mods. We’d recommend checking your vape kits specifications to ensure that it has a 510 connection before purchasing a 510 vape tank.

What is the best vape tank?

It’s difficult to say exactly which vape tank is the best as there are many different types of vape tank, and everybody has their own unique preferences.
However, the most popular vape tanks for sub-ohm/DTL vaping is:

The Falcon 2 tank by HorizonTech

The Zeus Sub-Ohm tank by Geek Vape

The best MTL vape tanks (and most popular) currently are:

The Nautilus 3 tank by Aspire

The Zlide tank by Innokin

Why is my vape tank leaking?

There are a number of reasons as to why an e cig tank might start leaking. Common causes include a coil that has been inserted incorrectly, using an e-liquid with the wrong ratio of VG/PG, not changing coils frequently enough, and not using the vape often enough.

To help minimise the risk of your tank leaking we recommend taking the following precautions:

  • Make sure your coil is either screwed into the base correctly or pushed into the tank fully.
  • Use high-VG vape juices with sub-ohm tanks and 50/50 VG/PG e-liquids with MTL vape tanks.
  • Change your coils approximately every 2 weeks and use your vape kit daily to prevent the coil becoming oversaturated with vape juice.
  • Opt for a vape tank with a top-airflow system and a top-fill system so that the e-liquid cannot seep out of the bottom when the device isn’t in use.
