Sub-Ohm Vaping

Sub-Ohm Vaping

Sub-ohm vaping is one of those terms that you’re familiar with, but probably don’t know a great deal about. You’ve heard other vape enthusiasts discuss it, and it can almost feel like they’re members of some secret club that you don’t have access to. So, what is sub-ohm vaping, how is it different from standard vaping, and what else should you know about it? All of these questions, and more, will be answered down below:

What is sub-ohm vaping?

Sub-ohm vaping is a way of vaping that produces massive clouds of vapour. Have you ever walked down the street and seem someone almost disappear amongst a gigantic vape cloud? The chances are they were sub-ohming, which is why your vape cloud paled in comparison.

This is all thanks to the resistance of the coils in your vaping device. The lower the resistance, the larger the power output. Sub-ohm devices will use coils that have resistance levels below one ohm - now you see where the term comes from! This usually requires the use of some type of vape mod to increase the electrical output flowing through the device. These days, you can get ones that reach at least 200 Watts of power, creating massive vape clouds.

Scientifically, sub-ohming basically follows Ohm’s and Joule’s laws of electricity. In effect, by using a non-variable voltage source - like the battery - you will increase the power output of your device when you decrease the resistance of your coils.

What are the benefits of sub-ohm vaping?

There are many reasons you might consider this style of vaping. The key advantage for most people is that you can create huge clouds. A lot of vapers love trying to make the biggest clouds around. It’s almost like a reputation thing. The bigger the cloud, the more impressive you are. Of course, size doesn’t really matter, but it can come in handy if you’re looking to make a big impression.

Aside from this, there are some genuinely practical reasons to start sub-ohm vaping:

  • Improve the flavour: The beauty of a sub-ohm coil is that it can vaporise lots of liquid all in one go. So, this means that you absorb more e-liquid with each puff, leading to a far more intense flavour.

  • Better airflow: This style of vaping works best when you inhale it directly to your lungs. As such, you need an unrestricted airflow, and sub-ohming can provide just that. With better airflow, this also means your vape kit will cool down quicker.

  • Warm vaping: Similarly, the high power output from sub-ohm vaping means that the liquid gets heated up more efficiently. As a result, this can lead to a warm vape. For some of you, this might be preferable to the standard vaping experience that is usually cold.

As you can see, this type of vaping does hold some advantages over the typical style. So, it’s definitely something you should consider looking into.

What do you need to start sub-ohm vaping?

Nowadays, you can buy a vape kit that includes everything you need to start sub-ohming. It will have a sub-ohm tank, a power output of at least 30 Watts, and a suitable battery. But, you can also go ahead and buy everything individually to create a custom vape kit by yourself.

If you choose to do this, then make sure you look for sub-ohm tanks with coils that are below 0.5 ohms at the very least. The lower the resistance, the more power the coils can handle. Speaking of which, get your hands on a mod that gives you suitable power. 30 Watts is seen as the bare minimum, but most serious vapers like to go for at least 40 to get those extra big clouds.

The battery is also crucial - you need to choose one that can handle the watts coursing through your vape kit. Generally speaking, the higher the AMP rating, the better.

Are there any sub-ohm vaping tips?

Yes, there are a few! Firstly, it’s a good idea to get vape liquids with a high content of VG. This stands for vegetable glycerin, and it helps to produce the clouds of vapour. You’ll often see e-liquids with either VG or PG in them - go for VG if you want to make big clouds with intense flavours.

Secondly, make sure the airflow is all the way open when you use your device. These days, vape kits and sub-ohm devices will have adjustable airflows, so move yours to its most open setting.

Finally, increase the speed of the drag when you’re inhaling from your vape device. The longer and faster it is, the bigger the clouds will be.

What are the drawbacks of sub-ohm vaping?

The good news is that there are no issues relating to health & safety. Or, let’s rephrase that; there are no issues that don’t already exist when using standard vaping. It’s not worse for your health, and there aren’t any additional safety concerns to be worried about. As long as you’re responsible and read the instructions, then you shouldn’t have any problems.

The main drawback is that sub-ohm vaping is hardly discreet. If you want to subtly vape to feed your nicotine addiction, then this will make you stick out like a sore thumb. Therefore, it’s also not ideal in social situations when you’re in public areas - like a beer garden, or outside a restaurant. People around you can be annoyed if they’re subjected to huge vape clouds all the time.

The other issue is that you will consume far more power than you would when vaping the traditional way. The bigger the cloud, the more power you require. So, if you vape all day, then your battery will wear out quickly.

Sub-ohm vaping has grown as a trend and continues to be very popular. As a result, more and more sub-ohm products and kits have been released on the market. If you want to give this a go, then make sure you get the right equipment for this style of vaping. For any help or tips, feel free to contact us. We can sort you out with the best vape kit for sub-ohming, and provide additional advice on how to get the biggest clouds.
