What is a Vape Tank?

A vape tank is an important part of any vape kit - it’s the part of your vape that contains the vape juice and coil. Vape tanks come in a wide variety of different sizes and styles, from Direct to Lung (DTL tanks) for powerful sub-ohm vaping and dense vapour, to Mouth to Lung tanks (MTL) that offer a sensation similar to smoking. Experienced vapers might prefer to choose either an RTA or RDA tank, which are rebuildable tanks that give you the opportunity to completely customise your experience, offering you complete control over the intensity of the power, vapour and flavour.

Vape Tank Components

The majority of tanks are made up of a few key components -

  • Drip Tip - The section at the top of the vape tank, often a plastic mouthpiece, where the vapour is inhaled from.
  • Top Cap - Where the refill port is located.
  • Glass - The vape tank glass holds the e-liquid.
  • Coil - The part of the tank that vapourises the liquid.
  • Base Plate - The section that attaches to the vape kit via the connection pin (usually 510).

How Do Vape Tanks Work?

Vape tanks hold e-liquid, which when powered by the device’s battery, is heated by the coil within. This turns the vape juice into a vapour which you then inhale from the mouthpiece at the top of the tank. The type of coil within the tank can make a big difference. Mesh coils provide more flavour than standard coils, and high resistance coils produce less power and vapour than those with a low resistance - so picking up the right vape tank can make or break your experience.

What Type of Vape Tanks Are There?

There are 5 main types of vape tank, each with their own advantages.

  • MTL Vape Tank: Tanks that offer a tight inhale and discreet vapour for an experience similar to smoking.
  • DTL Vape Tank: Tanks that offer more power and more vapour for thick, flavoursome clouds and sub-ohm vaping.
  • RDA Vape Tank: Rebuildable dripping tanks that offer control and customisation.
  • RTA Vape Tank: A rebuildable vape tank that holds e-liquid, rather requiring to drip e-liquid in manually.
  • Disposable Vape Tank: Tanks that feature built-in non-replaceable coils for minimal maintenance and mess.

How to Clean a Vape Tank?

If you find that your vape juice is turning dark brown in your vape tank, it might be time for you to replace your coil and clean your tank.

  • Start by removing the tank from the mod
  • Separate the tank into its different sections.
  • Remove and dispose of the coil
  • Rinse the glass, top cap and base plate under clean, warm running water.
  • Remove excess water using a clean dry cloth.
  • Insert a new coil and put the tank back together.

Note: Make sure you’ve primed your coil to ensure the cotton is fully saturated before use to prevent burning taste.
