The IQOS ILUMA family is now the main range across the UK, and the next-generation ILUMA i ONE is rolling out shortly. If you're trying to work out which device to buy, how the TEREA sticks differ from the old HEETS, or how to set up an ILUMA from the box for the first time, this is the guide. Updated for 2026.
We'll cover the four current ILUMA devices, what's actually new in the ILUMA i refresh, the TEREA stick range, first-time setup, the switching path from older IQOS Originals or Duo, and the practical buying decision. If you've used the old blade-style IQOS, the move to ILUMA is the biggest leap the brand has made in a decade.
The IQOS ILUMA family at a glance
Four devices in the current line-up. Same heating technology across all of them, different form factors and battery layouts.
| Model | RRP | Form factor | Battery life | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ILUMA One | £19 | Single piece | ~20 sessions per charge | First-time buyers, simplicity |
| ILUMA Standard | £39 | Holder + pocket charger | 2 sessions per holder + 20 from charger | Daily users, day-out battery |
| ILUMA Prime | £59 | Holder + pocket charger, premium materials | 2 sessions per holder + 20 from charger | Premium feel |
| ILUMA i ONE (new) | ~£30 expected | Single piece | Improved battery (TBC) | Replacement for ILUMA One |
All four use the same SmartCore Induction System and the same TEREA tobacco sticks. They all share the same flavour range. The choice between them is about form factor, battery, and budget — not about technology.
SmartCore Induction — how the ILUMA range works
The ILUMA family uses induction heating. Each TEREA stick has a small stainless-steel coated heating element built into the centre of the tobacco plug. When you insert a stick into the holder, the device generates an electromagnetic field that heats this internal core. The tobacco warms from inside out, releasing nicotine-bearing vapour without combustion.
Three practical consequences:
- No cleaning. No blade pushing into raw tobacco means no residue inside the holder. Older IQOS Originals and Duo needed cleaning every couple of packs — ILUMA needs none.
- No breakages. The old ceramic blade was the most common failure point. There's no blade in ILUMA.
- More consistent flavour. Heating from inside the stick produces an even temperature throughout the tobacco, so the last puff tastes like the first.
For the underlying science of heat-not-burn vs combustion, see our heated tobacco explained guide.
IQOS ILUMA One — the entry kit
The ILUMA One is the all-in-one model. There's no separate holder; the whole device is one piece, roughly pen-shaped. You insert a TEREA, press the button to start heating, wait around 20 seconds for the LED to go solid, then inhale.
Battery: ~20 sessions per full charge. When it's empty, you wait 90–120 minutes for a full recharge.
Best for: first-time buyers, casual users, travel.
Trade-off: when the battery dies you can't use it until it's charged. There's no docking-between-sticks flexibility.
If you're new to heated tobacco and unsure whether you'll stick with it, the ILUMA One is the smartest first purchase. £19 is a low barrier to entry, and the device gives you the full ILUMA experience. The new ILUMA i ONE is the next-gen version of this — more on that below.
IQOS ILUMA Standard — the daily driver
The ILUMA Starter Kit (often just called "ILUMA") is two pieces: a slim pen-shaped holder and a pocket charger that the holder docks into. The holder is good for two consecutive sessions before it needs to dock; the pocket charger holds enough capacity for around 20 sessions before needing its own USB-C top-up.
Battery: 2 sessions per holder charge, 20 sessions per pocket-charger charge.
Best for: daily users who want flexibility through the day.
Trade-off: two pieces to carry instead of one. The pocket charger is too big for slim jeans pockets — fine for jacket pockets and bags.
For most committed users, this is the right pick. The ability to dock the holder between sticks means you almost never run into a "device flat" moment during the day. The £20 premium over the ILUMA One pays for that flexibility. For our full review of this model, see our IQOS ILUMA review.
IQOS ILUMA Prime — the premium option
Same internals as the standard ILUMA, dressed up. Premium leather-look wrap on the pocket charger, magnetic lid that snaps shut, slightly larger battery, and a generally more refined feel in hand.
Battery: marginally better than the standard ILUMA — same usage pattern.
Best for: people who want the premium aesthetic.
Trade-off: £20 more than the Standard for what amounts to materials and finish, not function.
If the difference between £39 and £59 is meaningful to you, stick with the Standard — the daily experience is essentially identical. If it isn't, the Prime is genuinely a nicer object to own.
IQOS ILUMA i ONE — the new generation
The ILUMA i refresh is Philip Morris's biggest hardware update since the ILUMA range launched. The ILUMA i ONE is the entry kit — same single-piece form factor as the current ILUMA One, but with the next-generation hardware inside.
What's reportedly new:
- Improved heating system. Refinement of the SmartCore induction approach.
- Better battery life than the current ILUMA One.
- Same TEREA compatibility. Existing TEREA sticks work with the new device.
The ILUMA i ONE is rolling out shortly. We're expecting stock at Grey Haze imminently — sign up on the IQOS collection page for restock alerts. Pricing should land around £30 for the entry kit based on official channels in other markets.
If you're not in a rush to buy, waiting for the ILUMA i ONE is reasonable — same money territory as the current ILUMA One, with refreshed internals. If you're switching from cigarettes today and don't want to wait, the current ILUMA One is the same buy at slightly lower cost.
TEREA tobacco sticks — the full range
Every device in the ILUMA family uses TEREA sticks. They come in three flavour groups, all in 20-stick packs at £6.95 per pack (or 10 packs for £66 with our multi-buy).
Classic tobacco blends
- Yellow — light and mellow, the entry-level tobacco
- Amber — balanced roasted tobacco, the closest to a traditional cigarette taste
- Teak — nutty and rounded
- Sienna — woody and smooth
- Russet — full-bodied, malty notes
Menthol blends
- Turquoise — light menthol
- Green — peppermint balance
- Blue — bold cool menthol
Aromatic and Pearl variants
- Mauve Wave — berry-mint, the most distinctive flavour
- Abora Pearl — aromatic apple
- Amelia Pearl, Starling Pearl, Twilight Pearl — newer aromatic releases

Setting up your IQOS ILUMA for the first time
The setup routine is the same across all ILUMA devices. Here it is for the standard ILUMA Starter Kit:
- Charge fully before first use. Plug the pocket charger into a USB-C cable. Full charge takes 90–120 minutes. The LED ring pulses white during charging and goes solid when full.
- Dock the holder. The holder lives inside the pocket charger. Once both are charged, you're ready.
- Insert a TEREA stick into the holder, foil-end down. It's magnetic — no force required.
- Press and hold the button for 4 seconds. The LED ring pulses, then turns solid when the stick is ready (around 20 seconds).
- Inhale. A session lasts 6 minutes or 14 puffs. The device vibrates twice as the session ends.
- Lift the spent stick straight out. Don't twist — TEREA isn't designed to be twisted, unlike the old HEETS.
For the ILUMA One (single-piece), step 2 is skipped. For the full step-by-step including troubleshooting, see our practical IQOS ILUMA guide.
Switching from older IQOS / HEETS
If you're moving across from an IQOS Originals, Duo, 3 DUO or 3 MULTI, two things have changed:
The devices are gone. All older IQOS hardware has been retired in favour of the ILUMA family. You can keep using your old device until it dies, but there's no warranty support coming and no new stock.
HEETS have been discontinued. HEETS sticks (which only worked with the older blade-based devices) were discontinued globally in 2025. The IQOS roadmap is now ILUMA-only, with TEREA as the supported tobacco stick. Existing HEETS stock you might find online is likely old, mislabelled, or counterfeit.
The flavour mapping from HEETS to TEREA is straightforward:
| HEETS flavour | TEREA equivalent |
|---|---|
| Amber | Amber |
| Yellow | Yellow |
| Russet | Russet |
| Sienna / Sienna Caps | Sienna |
| Mauve Wave | Mauve Wave |
| Turquoise | Turquoise |
| Green | Green |
| Blue | Blue |
| Teak | Teak |
Most flavour profiles transferred almost directly — the underlying tobacco blends are the same, just heated differently. For the full switching detail and flavour-by-flavour comparison, see our HEETS vs TEREA guide.
Which IQOS should you buy?
Practical buying guide based on situation:
- First-time buyer, unsure if you'll stick with it. ILUMA One at £19. Lowest barrier to entry, same heating tech as the rest of the range.
- Daily user, want flexibility. ILUMA Standard at £39. The pocket-charger setup is genuinely useful day-to-day.
- Want the premium aesthetic. ILUMA Prime at £59. Same internals as the Standard, nicer materials.
- Patient buyer, ok to wait a few weeks. ILUMA i ONE at ~£30. Newer hardware, modest upgrade over the current ILUMA One.
- Switching from an old IQOS Duo or Originals. ILUMA Standard is the natural upgrade — closest day-out battery experience to what you're used to.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between ILUMA, ILUMA Prime, ILUMA One, and ILUMA i ONE?
All four use the same SmartCore Induction heating system and the same TEREA sticks. The differences are form factor and battery layout. ILUMA One and ILUMA i ONE are single-piece; ILUMA and ILUMA Prime are two-piece (holder + pocket charger). Prime adds premium materials over Standard. ILUMA i ONE is the next-generation refresh of ILUMA One with refined hardware. Heating, flavour, and TEREA compatibility are identical across all four.
Can I use HEETS in any ILUMA device?
No. HEETS were designed for the older blade-based IQOS Originals and Duo devices. ILUMA uses induction heating with metal-tipped TEREA sticks. They're physically and electronically incompatible. HEETS were also discontinued globally in 2025, so they're no longer being made regardless.
How long does an ILUMA device last on a full charge?
ILUMA One and ILUMA i ONE: ~20 sessions per full charge. ILUMA Standard and Prime: 2 sessions per holder charge, plus the pocket charger holds enough for around 20 sessions before its own USB-C recharge.
How much does it cost to run an IQOS ILUMA?
TEREA sticks are £6.95 per pack of 20 (or 10 packs for £66 with our multi-buy). That's significantly less than a £14–16 pack of cigarettes. Most pack-a-day smokers recoup the device cost within a few weeks of switching.
Is the IQOS ILUMA safer than smoking?
The evidence so far suggests heated tobacco exposes users to fewer harmful chemicals than smoking, with Public Health England's 2018 review and the FDA's 2020 modified-risk authorisation both noting reductions in toxicants. It isn't risk-free though, and the long-term picture is still being built. Cancer Research UK and the NHS still position complete cessation as the clearest health move.
