Vape Coils explained
In this section you’ll find everything you could possibly need to know about vape oils - including what a vape coil is, the different types, how they work and which brands are best.
What is a vape coil?
A vape coil, sometimes referred to as an e-cig coil or atomiser is the part of a tank or vape kit that heats the e-liquid and turns it into vapour. Some vape kits feature replaceable coils that can be removed and replaced when they begin to taste burned, whilst some come with a built-in coil that’s fixed in place.
‘Vape Coils’ get their name from the way they were originally designed, where a piece of metal wire, located at the centre of the atomiser, is shaped like a spring coil.
Vape coils types
Unfortunately vape coils aren’t universal, which has lead to there being many different types being released over the years, in all different shapes, sizes and resistances. Here’s a quick guide to the most common types you might come across.
Mesh Vape Coils
Mesh vape coils are the best type of vape coils for enhanced flavour. This is due to the fact that they tend to have a larger surface area than other types of coil, which allows them to vapourise more e-liquid in one go. The larger quantity of vapour results in a more intense flavour.
High Resistance Vape Coils (MTL)
High resistance vape coils, more commonly referred to as mouth-to-lung vape coils or MTL coils are a type of coil that provides an experience that’s similar to smoking. They have a higher ohms (resistance), often between 0.8Ω - 1.2Ω and a lower maximum Wattage. These are the best type of coils for those who prefer a discreet amount of vapour, such as those switching from smoking to vaping.
Low Resistance Vape Coils (DTL)
Low resistance vape coils, better known as sub-ohm coils, DTL coils or direct-to-lung coils, are available in resistances of 0.4Ω or less and offer a much higher maximum wattage than MTL coils. These coils offer the user more power and thick, dense clouds full of flavour. They’re best for individuals who enjoy a strong vape with less nicotine.
Medium Resistance Vape Coils (RDTL)
Replacement coils with a resistance between 0.4Ω and 0.8Ω are often referred to as Restricted Direct-to-Lung coils, or RDTL coils. This type of coil is a mix between MTL and DTL coils, they produce less cloud than the DTL coils and have a lower max wattage, but offer more cloud and power than MTL coils. They’re a great option for those who enjoy intense flavour but want a less powerful hit.
How does a vape coil work?
Most coils feature a metal heating element located at the centre which is surrounded by a cotton wick - although the coil material can vary - which is saturated with e-liquid. As the element heats up it causes the vape juice to evaporate, turning it into a vapour which is then inhaled by the user.
Vape filters are made up of three main parts - the metal coil at the centre, the wick which surrounds the coil and the connection at the bottom of the coil which allows it to connect to the battery which in turn provides it with power so it can heat up.
